Young angel: sketch

A preparatory drawing for part of a new painting. Charcoal on paper.
Unfashionable though it is, the nude represents truth and innocence, an angel represents a higher power, and beauty makes willing slaves of us all. The ancients understood this, but this age is too crude to see anything but its own maladjustment.
The problems of this age are not an artist's problems: the job of the artist is to point to something better.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned
from The Second Coming - W. B. Yeats
