Woody

2002. Oil on canvas board, 18x14 inches.

Woody

This painting was completed in two and a half hours, with about half an hour of that taken up in breaks. Normally I take much longer than this to complete a painting, but some days things just seem to flow.

Finishing a painting in one session inevitably means one is working wet in wet. Even with the systematic old master approach I am trying to use, the effect is similar to impressionism. Perhaps a more correct term for this is alla prima. It produces a less finished but arguably more energetic effect.
