Bobbie

Oil on canvas, 20 x 16 inches.

A painting of a wonderful lady who volunteered to sit for our portraiture class when the booked model failed to show up. The sitter is an artist-printmaker. When talking to you, her face lights up, but in repose she develops a look that seems to penetrate eternity.

Although this painting is quite different in style, the mood that emerged during the painting made me think of Giorgione's masterpiece La Vecchia. If you have stood in front of Giorgione's painting, you will understand - the effect is somewhat lost on the web. It is of an old woman holding a piece of paper, on which is written col tempo, and seems to be an allegory of time.

The Web Gallery of Art has a reproduction of La Vecchia: their reproduction is rather desaturated; click on the picture for a much larger one (theoretically - but I couldn't get it to load).
