the Infanta Margarita Teresa :
preliminary oil sketch for a copy from Velázquez

Having applied the mathematical formula for child proportion shown elsewhere on this website, I painted a sketch of the Infanta Margarita Teresa at the age she would have been when the original Velazquez portrait was done. Before painting the clothes I have depicted the body the clothes will imprison.

Here is a detail of the preliminary sketch (updaed 20 November 2003):

of the Infanta Margarita Teresa

The clothes emphasise her containment by her role as a future pawn in the game of European political necessity. I would have written entrapment in her role, except that there is always a way out, not out of the role, but through it. We are all trapped in our roles, whether we are princes or people of no obvious importance.

I am trying to show the consciousness of a four- or five-year-old child who seems in the painting already to understand that there is no way out except through acceptance.
