Linocut

Goose inspired by Ancient Greek pottery painting

big goose

Original lino print 2001, 3x3 inches.

This is a linocut of a goose. The design was taken from an archaic period Greek vase and drawn onto a piece of lino 3 inches square, then cut with the usual linocutting tools (available from any big art store).

I enjoy lino because the crudeness of the medium prevents the fine shading that is possible with other printing and painting methods. Thus I can concentrate on the beauty of pure line. This is the charm of Ancient Greek vase painting: except in the late Hellenistic period the whole effect is dependent on line and form.
