Girl reading

copy after Fragonard

Fragonard copy: girl reading

Oil on canvas, 32x24 inches, Martin Dace 2002.

If you want to see this painting, and at the same time have the most delicious meal you're likely to get in north London (and at a reasonable price too), go to Bistro Aix, 54 Topsfield Parade, Tottenham Lane, Crouch End, London N8 8PT . . . 020 8340 6346.

This painting is for sale.

They also have my copy of Pellegrini's Venus and Cupid, which is already sold.

The Old Masters (I include in this phrase the great female painters also - but Old Mistresses doesn't sound quite right) copied from their predecessors as an essential part of their training. Sometimes a copy could sell for more than a painting by the original painter: Gainsborough for example made a copy of a Van Dyke which sold for more than a genuine Van Dyke in the same sale! Turner's copy of a Claude Lorraine hangs proudly next to the original in the Tate Britain.

In the present case I make no grand claims, but I'm rather proud of the result nevertheless. I certainly respect Fragonard now a great deal more than I did.
