Symbolist painting, oil on MDF board, approx. 15.5 x 15 inches (390 x 385mm), Martin Dace 2001. Price unframed UK£400 (approx. US$700.00) excluding shipping.
The symbolism of fairytales
In fairytales, human psychology is represented by the many characters in the story. For example, the serving maid who takes the heroine's place in The Goose Girl (Grimm) represents a lower part of ourselves which wishes to take over and replace the soul. In this picture this part is represented as a reptile.
The twins represent the two parts of the human soul. The real self or soul is often represented as being in two parts, for example the goose girl and the prince, or Eros and Psyche in The Golden Ass (Apuleius), or Gerda and Kay in The Snow Queen (Andersen). In this painting I have shown the two parts of the soul as naked children, to show the innocence necessary to psychological awakening.
